Roommate killed in 'personal grudge' in Motijheel, suspect arrested
Within hours of the recovery of the severed hands and feet of a young man in the capital's Motijheel, police have arrested a suspect. The arrested 21-year-old Shaheen Alam is accused of killing his roommate Obaidullah out of personal enmity and dismembering his body and throwing it in various places.
According to police sources, Shaheen was identified through analysis of CCTV footage on Saturday (February 28) afternoon. He was an employee of a hotel in Motijheel and lived as a roommate with the deceased Obaidullah in the same flat.
Police recovered a severed leg in front of Anand Community Center in Paltan on Friday night. The next morning, two hands were recovered from in front of Baitul Mukarram and later another leg from the Kamalapur Railway Station area.
After checking the fingerprints, the police confirmed that the recovered dismembered parts belonged to 30-year-old Obaidullah. He was a resident of Shibpur Upazila of Narsingdi and was working as a sales representative of a homeopathy company.
An officer involved in the investigation said that the CCTV footage in front of the Scout Bhaban showed a man coming on a bicycle and leaving something wrapped in black polythene. Shaheen was identified after analyzing the footage.
During the initial interrogation, Shaheen Alam claimed that the deceased Obaidullah used to behave abusively towards him and his family. Due to personal grudge, he strangled him to death on Friday night. Later, he cut the body into pieces and threw it in different places.
The police have seized a machete used in the murder and a full investigation into the incident is ongoing.
