RTJA condemns RUCSU VP's remarks, demands withdrawal of threat against journalists

The Rajshahi Television Journalists Association (RTJA) has expressed deep concern, strong condemnation and protest over remarks made by Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) Vice President Mostakur Rahman Jahid, in which he warned of taking action against journalists over their reporting on a recent assault incident on campus.

In a statement issued on Wednesday (July 29), RTJA President Sh. M. Saju and General Secretary Mustafizur Rahman Rasel called on the RUCSU VP to immediately withdraw his comments, describing them as a threat to press freedom and independent journalism.

According to the statement, Jahid made the remarks during a press conference following media coverage of recent violence on the Rajshahi University campus. RTJA said such comments are regrettable, unacceptable and incompatible with democratic values, as they seek to intimidate journalists for carrying out their professional responsibilities.

The association stressed that the fundamental duty of the media is to investigate and report matters of public interest accurately, objectively and impartially. If reports on violence, misconduct or irregularities damage the reputation of any individual or institution, RTJA said, the responsibility lies with those involved in the incidents—not with the journalists who report them.

The journalists' body also said a student leader is expected to demonstrate restraint and responsibility. Instead, threatening journalists and announcing punitive measures against them undermines freedom of expression, the free flow of information and democratic practice.

RTJA further asserted that journalists perform their duties in the public interest rather than out of personal bias, and vowed that media professionals would continue their work without yielding to intimidation or threats.

The association urged the Rajshahi University administration to treat the matter with due seriousness, take necessary measures, and ensure a safe and independent working environment for journalists covering campus affairs.
