RU professor permanently dismissed over sexual harassment, academic corruption

Rajshahi University has permanently dismissed Professor Probhash Kumar Karmakar of the Statistics Department over proven allegations of sexual harassment and academic corruption. The decision was taken at the 548th session of the syndicate on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam said multiple committees were formed to investigate the allegations. The syndicate approved the permanent dismissal based on the report and recommendations of a higher probe committee.

In August 2025, a student alleged that the professor behaved indecently, made improper proposals and was involved in academic irregularities when she visited his chamber. Following a written complaint from her mother, an investigation began, and he was temporarily relieved from duty amid student protests.

Professor Karmakar has denied the allegations, claiming it is political revenge and that he was set up. He said he was denied the opportunity to present his defence and did not receive justice.
