RU student found hanging in hostel room

Police have recovered the hanging body of a student from a hostel adjacent to Rajshahi University (RU).

The deceased is Mahfuzur Rahman, 23, a student of the university's Department of Material Science and Engineering for the 2022-23 academic year.

Police said that the body was recovered from a mess called Ayesha Tower in the city's Amjader Mor area on Wednesday (June 10) afternoon.

University sources claimed that Mahfuzur locked the door of his room from inside and hanged himself on Wednesday afternoon. It is said that he was talking to a young woman on his mobile phone at the time of the incident. Sensing the matter, the young woman called a friend in the room next to Mahfuzur and asked him to quickly find out. On receiving the news, other students of the hostel went to Mahfuzur's room and found the door locked from inside. Later, after knocking for a long time, they forced the door open and entered inside. At that time, Mahfuzur was seen hanging by his neck. Although he was lowered down, his classmates confirmed that he was dead by then.

Police and university administration representatives arrived at the scene after receiving the news.

A classmate of the deceased Mahfuzur said that he had been in a relationship with a girl for about four to five years. Although there were some problems in the relationship a few days ago, it was resolved later.

University Proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman said that the police were informed as soon as the news was received. The body was taken down in the presence of police, teachers, students and journalists. The initial autopsy report suggests that it was a suicide. No injury marks were found on his body and no suicide note was recovered from the room.

Motihar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Golam Kabir said that the autopsy of the body has been conducted. Initially, it seems to be a suicide. However, the real cause of death can be confirmed after the investigation.
