RU student suffering stroke airlifted to Dhaka by air ambulance
A critically ill student of Rajshahi University, suffering from a brain haemorrhage, has been airlifted to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment by air ambulance. The initiative was taken by the university administration upon the advice of doctors on Sunday morning.
The student is Jahidul Islam, also known as Simun. He is a student of the 2025-26 academic session at the university's Institute of Business Administration (IBA). His home is in Chattogram.
According to university sources, Jahidul suddenly fell ill on Saturday around 11am due to a brain haemorrhage. He was quickly taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Doctors there observed his condition and advised keeping him in the ICU. However, complications arose initially as no ICU bed was available.
When the matter was brought to the university administration's attention, they arranged an ICU bed for Jahidul at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. His treatment continued there. However, when his condition deteriorated further, doctors advised sending him to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Doctors said that given Jahidul's critical condition, a long road journey could be risky for him. Therefore, an air ambulance was needed to transfer him to Dhaka quickly and safely. Following the doctors' advice, the university administration arranged an air ambulance on an emergency basis.
On Sunday morning, Jahidul was airlifted from the field adjacent to the hostel of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital to Dhaka. Preparations have been made to admit him to Dhaka's National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, where an ICU bed has also been arranged, said university authorities.
Professor Md Shariful Islam, director of IBA, said doctors did not consent to transferring Jahidul by any other means other than air ambulance, considering his physical condition. Later, based on the decision of the family and the institute authorities, arrangements were made to take him to Dhaka. The Vice-Chancellor of the university has also directly cooperated in arranging the ICU at Dhaka's National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital.
Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam was present at the scene when the ill student was sent to Dhaka. He said necessary measures have been taken from the university administration's side to ensure his treatment since learning of Jahidul's illness. He also said necessary cooperation will continue for his advanced treatment.
