Rumeen Farhana to contest independently in Brahmanbaria-2 seat
BNP has left the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, comprising Sarail and Ashuganj, for its ally Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam. As a result, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam candidate Maulana Junayed Al Habib will contest the election with BNP’s backing in the seat.
Barrister Rumeen Farhana, BNP’s assistant international affairs secretary, was an aspirant for the party nomination in the constituency. Despite not receiving the nomination, she has announced her decision to run in the election as an independent candidate.
Reacting to the decision on Tuesday, December 23, Rumeen Farhana said she would contest the election with everyone’s prayers and would purchase the nomination form either the next day or the day after. She said BNP is a large party with its own realities and that the seat had to be left due to the alliance with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
Asked whether the party would take organisational action against her for contesting independently, she said the party would take action if it deemed necessary and that she would not be able to prevent it.
The Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, comprising Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas and the Budhanti and Chandura unions of Bijoynagar upazila, had at least six BNP leaders seeking the party’s nomination, including Rumeen Farhana. In previous parliamentary elections, both Awami League and BNP had left the seat to their respective alliance partners.
