Rupganj steel factory explosion injures 3
Three workers sustained serious burn injuries following a furnace explosion at a steel factory in Rupganj early Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 5:00 AM at Bikrampur Steel Limited, located in the Bhulta Union area of the upazila, while workers were engaged in melting iron.
The injured—identified as Bellal Hossain (35), Roman Mia (30), and Golam Rabbani (35)—were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the institute, said, “The three workers were brought in early this morning. Bellal suffered burns to 20% of his body, Roman 36%, and Golam 15%.”
Factory official Arif Khan stated that the explosion was caused by a sudden leak in the furnace during operation. “Three of our workers were injured. They were immediately rescued and sent to the burn unit,” he added.
Confirming the incident, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tarikul Islam said, “We are investigating the matter to determine the exact cause of the explosion.”
While no official statement has confirmed negligence, local residents allege that such incidents are frequent due to the use of outdated equipment and untrained workers at the facility.
