Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the maximum punishment for Sohail Rana, the accused in the murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, will be ensured within a month.

The prime minister made the remarks while addressing an event marking the 127th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the Nazrul Manch in Trishal, Mymensingh, on Saturday afternoon, May 23.

"The maximum punishment for Ramisa's killer, insha Allah, will be ensured within the next month. That maximum punishment will be the death penalty, so that no other individual dares to commit such violence against children or women in the future," he said.

The prime minister also said the trial process will be completed within the established legal framework, and no leniency will be shown in this regard.

The prime minister further said that exemplary punishment must be ensured to prevent anyone from daring to commit crimes like child or women abuse in the future. He also stressed the need for political and social reforms to establish justice in society.

The brutal murder of child Ramisa in Pallabi has sparked widespread discussion and outrage across the country. With multiple recent incidents of child and women abuse, public anxiety over safety is growing.

Experts and human rights activists say that in such cases, it is not just about enforcing the law but also about ensuring the speed of investigation, transparency of the judicial process and swift punishment for perpetrators.

Calls have intensified on social media and across civil society for increasing the effectiveness of speedy trial tribunals, speedy resolution of cases and exemplary punishment.

The government has already spoken of a tough stance against child and women abuse and emphasised ensuring swift justice, which is why the Ramisa murder case has been given special priority for speedy resolution.
