Miscreants have reportedly attempted sabotage at two Grameen Bank branches in Dhamrai and Raninagar upazilas of Naogaon.

Locals said that a petrol bomb attack was launched on the Suapur branch of Grameen Bank in Dhamrai early on Wednesday.

Suapur Bazar night watchman Selim Mia said that miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the Grameen Bank branch in Suapur Bazar area of Suapur Union of Dhamrai at 4:30 am. The bank is located on the first floor of a two-story building. The petrol bomb hit the wall of the building and fell on the roof of a nearby tin-shed room, causing a fire. The bank was not damaged.

Later, when Selim shouted, people in the area quickly extinguished the fire with water and sand.

Dhamrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam said: "We have already inspected the scene. There are six branches of Grameen Bank in the Dhamrai Police Station area, five of which are in rented houses. They are guarded by local watchmen. The police are monitoring them."

In addition, someone set fire in front of the bank at Kachua Bazar branch in Raninagar Upazila on Tuesday night.

Lotus Hossain, a senior officer of that branch, said that he woke up early on Wednesday and saw smoke rising in front of the bank. When asked about the cause of the fire, the night watchman told him that he saw a fire burning on the road in front of the bank sometime during the night. He then immediately extinguished the fire.

Raninagar Police Station OC Abdul Hafiz Md. Raihan claimed: "There was no fire in front of Grameen Bank. After receiving the news, we inspected the scene and found no evidence of a fire. However, smoke was rising about 100 yards away from that branch of Grameen Bank.

"Someone may have set it on fire at night to ward off the cold. Even so, an investigation is underway to determine whether it was sabotage or not."
