Saddam released on bail, visits graves of wife and child
Banned Chhatra League leader Jewel Hasan, also known as Saddam, from Bagerhat, was released from Jashore jail following a High Court order four days after the death of his wife and child.
After the bail order reached the prison, he was released from Jashore Central Jail at around 2 pm on Wednesday, January 28.
The matter was confirmed by Asif Uddin, assistant commissioner and executive magistrate of Jashore district and acting senior jail superintendent.
Saddam’s brother Shahidul Islam said that after returning home in the evening, Saddam visited the graves of his wife and child and broke down in tears, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere.
Earlier, on Friday afternoon, January 23, Saddam’s wife Kaniz Survana Swarnali died by suicide after killing their nine-month-old son Nazim at their home in Bekhedanga village of Bagerhat.
The following day, Saturday, January 24, family members brought the bodies of Saddam’s wife and child to the gate of Jashore Central Jail by ambulance. With prison authorities’ permission, Saddam was allowed to see the bodies for only five minutes inside the jail gate at around 7.30 pm.
The decision to deny him parole and allow only a brief viewing at the jail gate sparked widespread criticism on social media. Later, the High Court granted him bail, leading to his release on Wednesday afternoon.
