Salahuddin points out inconsistencies in July charter draft
Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, has raised concerns over inconsistencies in the final draft of the highly anticipated July Charter.
Speaking on Sunday, Salahuddin Ahmed said, “We received the draft last Saturday and will provide our feedback within the stipulated timeframe. However, at first glance, it appears that some aspects are inconsistent and not properly presented.”
Another BNP Standing Committee member, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, emphasized BNP’s commitment to national unity through the July Charter. “BNP has sacrificed for the sake of unity and extended cooperation. Now, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure its implementation,” he said.
Tuku also stressed the importance of parliamentary approval for the Charter, stating, “To give the July Charter constitutional status, it must be passed in Parliament. Those raising unnecessary demands to delay the implementation are, in effect, aiding the fallen government.”
The National Unity Commission sent the final draft of the July Charter to political parties on August 16. The draft outlines 84 points of political consensus and eight key commitments for implementation. It also proposes that constitutional and legal legitimacy should not be challenged in court. However, it does not detail the exact implementation mechanism.
Meanwhile, the tenure of the National Unity Commission has been extended by one month, until September 15, according to a notification from the Cabinet Division. Further meetings with political parties are expected to finalize the implementation process and the Charter.
