Scammers target visa Seekers, Indian High Commission issues warning

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has issued a warning urging Bangladeshi visa applicants to stay alert against fraud, after reports emerged of individuals posing as High Commission officials and offering visa and consular services in exchange for money.

The High Commission shared details of the matter in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (August 5).

According to the High Commission, fraudsters are contacting various individuals while claiming to be officials of the Indian High Commission. They are falsely promising to arrange quick visas or other consular facilities in exchange for money.

Clarifying the matter, the Indian High Commission said that none of its officials ever contact anyone through phone calls, WhatsApp, email, or social media to promise visas, nor do they ever demand any money for such services. All applications for Indian visas are processed solely through the designated official government procedure.

In this situation, the High Commission advised that under no circumstances should money be transacted in response to any suspicious phone call, message, or offer. It also specifically urged people not to share personal information, copies of passports, bank details, or any kind of financial information with unknown or unfamiliar persons.

The statement further noted that anyone who encounters such fraud or an attempt at fraud should report it to the authorities immediately. It requested that when filing a complaint, relevant evidence — including the phone number, message, or screenshots involved — be sent to the email address visa.dhaka@mea.gov.in.

Alongside this, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka urged the general public to stay alert themselves and to warn others in order to help prevent this type of fraud.
