Schedule for 1st phase upazila polls on Thursday

Election Commission Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said the schedule for the 153 upazila elections of the first phase will be announced on Thursday (March 21).

He revealed the information while talking to the journalists in the EC building on Wednesday (March 20).

Meanwhile, the gazette of upazila election management and conduct rules has been published on Wednesday.

The upazila parishad elections will be held in four phases this year. Voting of the first phase may be held on May 4. There have been major changes in the code of conduct and election rules in upazila elections.

It said that the signatures of 250 supporters to stand as independent candidates were cancelled. Apart from this, candidates can print colorful posters and communicate through social media.

In the revised rules, the power of the presiding officer to stop voting at the center has been increased in upazila elections like the National parliamentary elections.
