A schoolgirl, Sharmin Binti Shahriar, was fatally hacked to death outside her home in the capital's Rayerbazar.

The incident took place around 10:00pm in an alley near her residence on Wednesday (February 25).

Following the incident, police have arrested a youth named Siam in connection with the murder.

DMP Dhanmondi Zone Assistant Police Commissioner (AC) Mustafa Tarikuzzaman confirmed this today (February 26).

"The knife used in the murder and a blood-stained shirt have also been recovered," he said.

Sharmin, an eighth grader at Rayerbazar High School, lived with her family in a rented flat in Hazaribagh. She was rushed to Shikdar Medical and then Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was declared dead.

According to deceased family, Binti went out at night with her younger brother Nabil. Shortly after, her father, Belal Hossain, heard a commotion and discovered his daughter had been stabbed and left at the scene.

Nadia, Sharmin’s mother, alleged that a young man named Siam attacked her daughter. “Siam had been harassing Sharmin via mobile for several years. I had warned him before. Today he killed my daughter. We want justice,” she said.

Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hazaribagh Police Station, said, “the stabbing appears to be love-related. Sharmin suffered multiple stab wounds to her back and shoulders. Her body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy.”
