BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep concern over the shooting of BNP leader Hasan Mollah in Keraniganj, alleging that such covert attacks are being carried out in a planned manner to derail the upcoming national parliamentary election.

He made the remarks in a statement issued on Friday, January 23.

Terrorists opened fire on Hasan Mollah on Thursday night in front of the Ward 9 BNP office in Jagannathpur village under Hazratpur Union of Keraniganj Model Police Station, leaving him critically injured. Hasan Mollah is the general secretary of Hazratpur Union BNP.

In the statement, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that after the fall of what he described as the Awami League’s autocratic regime through a student–mass movement, criminals who had been lying low are once again engaging in various forms of anarchy with the aim of creating instability in the country.

He said those responsible for the attack on Hasan Mollah must be quickly identified, brought under the law and given exemplary punishment. Otherwise, they may carry out even larger acts of sabotage.

The BNP secretary general said people from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation, must remain united to establish democracy, protect voting rights and ensure the safety of life and property.

He also stressed the need to improve the deteriorating law and order situation and said the government must create a fear-free environment in the country to ensure a free and fair election.
