Section 144 imposed at Begum Rokeya University campus, outsider entry banned

Section 144 has been imposed at Begum Rokeya University (BRU) campus in Rangpur amid back-to-back programmes announced by the university's Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir units.

University Registrar (Additional) and Proctor Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman confirmed the matter on Tuesday, August 4.

He said, "Classes and examinations will continue as usual. Section 144 has been imposed only on processions, meetings and rallies in the interest of maintaining peace and order on campus."

Earlier, the two organisations had announced separate programmes. The Rangpur metropolitan unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir announced a protest march and rally from Lalbagh Square to Abu Sayeed Square at 5pm for 30 minutes.

On the other hand, Rangpur Metropolitan Chhatra Dal announced a protest march and rally at the Abu Sayeed Square Park intersection at 4pm. Member Secretary Rabiul Islam Rabi called on all unit leaders and activists from across the metropolis to be present in time.

Additionally, the Begum Rokeya University administration has banned the entry of outsiders and all types of vehicles on campus. The decision was announced in an emergency notification from the Proctor's Office.

The notification, signed by Proctor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, said the decision has been taken in the interest of maintaining overall peace, order and a safe educational environment on campus. As per the directive, guests, visitors, bicycles, motorcycles, rickshaws, private cars and all other types of vehicles will not be allowed to enter the campus. However, regular academic and administrative activities will continue as usual.

It may be mentioned that on Monday, August 3, clashes broke out between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir over a banner at an exhibition titled "July Against Atrocities" at the university's Independence Memorial Ground. Brick-throwing, chair-throwing and chases left several people injured on both sides.
