Following a rally held by the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Gopalganj, violent clashes erupted when banned Awami League and Chhatra League activists attacked the NCP’s vehicle procession by blocking the road. The incident turned the town into a conflict zone.

In response, the administration has imposed Section 144 to restore order.

The violence broke out around 2:45 PM on Wednesday, 16 July, near the launch ghat area of the district town. Police intervention to control the situation led to further clashes between law enforcement and Awami League–Chhatra League supporters. As of now, the situation remains tense.

Law enforcement officials have resorted to firing blank bullets to disperse the crowds and regain control.

Meanwhile, NCP leaders have taken shelter at the police superintendent’s office. The clashes have spread across the town, with the NCP rally stage vandalized and set on fire.

The central NCP has been conducting foot marches across several districts throughout July. Today, they organized a long march and rally in Gopalganj.
