Section 144 imposed in Sunamganj after clash over haor embankment cutting
A clash between two groups over cutting an embankment in Dakua Haor under Sunamganj Sadar upazila has left at least 20 people injured. The administration has imposed Section 144 in the area to bring the situation under control.
According to local sources, an emergency meeting was held on Saturday morning, April 4, in the presence of Additional District Magistrate Sanjit Kumar to resolve the dispute over the embankment. A committee was formed to resolve the matter.
Allegations arose that during the meeting, several hundred armed individuals from Noagaon, Gorergaon, Kandagaon and Ulutulu villages, acting on the instructions of Member Moshbir, forcibly cut the embankment, raising fears of flooding in the haor.
Farmers from Mohanpur village were attacked when they tried to stop the embankment cutting. At least 20 people, including Ali, Afiz, Sukur Ali, Azizul and Jahangir, were injured.
Sunamganj Sadar Upazila Executive Officer said one party violated the law and cut the embankment before the administration could reach a decision. Legal action will be taken against those involved.
Additional District Magistrate Sanjit Kumar said action is being taken against those who cut the embankment defying administrative directives. Section 144 has been imposed to control the situation.
Local UP member Nurul Amin alleged that their villagers were attacked when they came forward to protect the embankment. Tension prevails in the area following the incident.
