Sector Commander KM Shafiullah passes away
Retired Major General KM Shafiullah (Bir Uttam), a distinguished sector commander during the Liberation War, has passed away at the age of 90.
He died on Sunday (January 26), around 8:45am while receiving treatment at the Officers' Ward of CMH.
According to family sources, KM Shafiullah had been suffering from various health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, thyroid complications, fatty liver, and dementia.
His first janaza will be held at the Rupganj Abdul Hamid High School grounds in Narayanganj after Zohr prayer, followed by a second janaza at the Army's Central Mosque after Asr.
Born on September 2, 1934, in Rupganj, Narayanganj, KM Shafiullah was a key figure in the 1971 Liberation War. He was the second chief of the 2nd East Bengal Regiment in Joydebpur and led the regiment's revolt. He later became the commander of Sector No. 3 at the start of the Liberation War, and also led the 'S' Force when three regular army brigades were formed.
Shafiullah was awarded the title of 'Bir Uttam' for his exceptional contribution to the Liberation War. After the war, he served as Chief of Army Staff from 1972 to 1975 and later represented Bangladesh as an ambassador to Malaysia, Canada, Sweden, and the UK. He retired in 1992 after a year as an OSD following his return to Bangladesh in 1991.
