A court has rejected the bail application of Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and senior vice-president of district Awami League, in a murder case filed over the killing of interior worker Selim Mandal during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The hearing was held in the court of Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Selina Akhter at 11:30 am on Monday, March 2.

Ivy's lawyers submitted a bail application on her behalf during this time. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail application and ordered her to be shown arrested.

According to case details, on July 20, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, a building was set on fire at Shimrail More in Siddhirganj. Three workers, including Selim Mandal—an interior decor worker at Dutch-Bangla Bank—died in the fire. A farmer named Wazed Ali filed a murder case as plaintiff at Siddhirganj Police Station on June 30 last year. On February 26, police showed Ivy arrested through the court, alleging her involvement based on investigation into the case.

Earlier, Ivy was made an accused in a total of 11 cases filed in various police stations of the district on charges of murder and attempted murder. She obtained bail from the High Court in 10 of these cases. However, with the state appealing in five cases, these matters are currently awaiting hearing in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

Ivy's lawyer Advocate Aulad Hossain said, "After a long hearing, the court rejected the bail application. We will apply for bail in the High Court."

It is to be noted that law enforcement arrested Ivy from her residence 'Chunka Kuthir' in Deobhog area of the city in the early hours of May 9, 2025. She has been in Kashimpur jail since then.
