Serving in jail for money, man sent again in prison
Police have arrested a man who used to served in jail for another person's crime in exchange of money.
The identity of the man disclosed when he appeared before a court in disguise of someone else. The incident happened in Narsingdi.
Accused Harun Mia, 62, was arrested again by the police from the prison gate when he was released after spending one month and six days in prison under the name of another person.
In 2024, three accused in a human trafficking case in Narsingdi's Raipura surrendered to the court seeking bail. Later they were denied bail and sent to jail.
But after a few days, the prison authorities sensed that Harun Mia is serving the jail term impersonating himself as one of the convicts Salim Miah.
Preliminary investigation revealed that in exchange of money, he appeared in court on behalf of others and used to go to jail. When the matter came to the notice of the court, the real accused Salim Mia later surrendered.
Later, Narsingdi Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal Judge Muhammad Ali Ahsan granted Harun Mia bail. However, at the same time, the court ordered a new case against him on charges of fraud and misleading the court.
The police arrested him again when he was released from prison after the court's order.
State lawyers said that imprisonment by proxy is a serious crime. The punishment of one cannot be served by the other.
They also said that the negligence or involvement of any lawyer in this incident will also be investigated.
Police said they are investigating who else is behind the whole incident and whether it is an organized fraud ring.
