Seven killed as truck falls into ditch in Cumilla's Daudkandi

Seven people have been killed and five others injured in a severe road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Daudkandi upazila, Cumilla. Doctors have described the condition of the injured as critical.

The accident occurred around 2:45 am on Tuesday, April 14, in the Hasanpur area of the upazila. Police said a rice-laden truck travelling from Dinajpur to Noakhali lost control and fell into a ditch beside the highway. All those on board were agricultural labourers involved in harvesting paddy.

Seven people died at the scene. The deceased are Abjal Hossain, 35; Sohrab Hossain, 40; Abu Salek, 42; Sumon Mia, 21; Bishu Mia, 34; Abu Hossain, 29; and Abdur Rashid, 58. All of the deceased hailed from Dinajpur district.

The five injured are Amir Ali, Tarikul Islam, Jalal Hossain, Md Aminul Islam and Jahangir Alam. They were first taken to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at night after their condition deteriorated.

Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Iqbal Bahar Majumdar said the bodies of the deceased have been recovered and kept at the police station.

Dr Nayan De of Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex said the condition of the injured is extremely critical.
