Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has announced that seven key pieces of information on the National Identity Card—voter’s name, father’s name, mother’s name, occupation, date of birth, voter address and photograph—cannot be corrected for now.

He shared the update during a briefing at the EC headquarters in Agargaon on Monday (December 1).

He said the new NID registration process is still underway, and only those registered by 31 October 2025 will be included in the voter list and eligible to vote in the next national election. Anyone registering after that date will not qualify for voting in the upcoming polls.

Responding to queries about BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, Akhtar Ahmed stated that Tarique is not yet registered as a voter. However, he added that the Election Commission may include any individual in the voter list at any time if it decides to do so, in accordance with the law.

The EC has also extended the deadline for expatriate voter registration by one week, setting the new cutoff at 25 December.

Bangladesh first introduced a photo-based voter list during the 2007–2008 caretaker government. Tarique Rahman's mother, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, was registered as a voter at the cantonment address as of 29 November 2008.

Tarique has lived in London since 2008 and has not returned to the country. However, after the August 5 uprising, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman returned to Bangladesh and has since registered as a voter.
