Chaos erupted late Sunday night in the Nilkhet and New Market areas as students from Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka College engaged in a violent clash, leaving several people, including journalists, injured.

The confrontation reportedly began around midnight and quickly escalated into a chase between the two groups. Witnesses said both sides hurled bricks and stones, turning the bustling commercial areas into scenes of confusion and fear.

Mohammad Jahangir, Assistant Commissioner of the New Market Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said the clash stemmed from a dispute over the setting up of shops on the footpath in front of Dhaka University’s Shahnewaz Hall. “The disagreement triggered a chase and counter-chase between students of the two institutions,” he explained.

In an attempt to defuse the situation, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Shadik Kayem and other student leaders rushed to the scene. Meanwhile, police deployed a large contingent to the Nilkhet and New Market areas to restore order.

Authorities later managed to disperse both groups and said sufficient police personnel remain in place to prevent further unrest. Officials confirmed that the situation is currently under control, though the atmosphere remains tense.
