The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association has demanded the arrest and expulsion of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists allegedly involved in an attack on its members at Shahbagh Police Station area in the capital.

At a press conference on Thursday (April 23), held at their office, association president Monjur Hossain Mahi outlined a three-point demand, including the immediate arrest of those involved, permanent expulsion of Dhaka University students implicated in the incident, and ensuring a safe environment for independent journalism across the country.

Following the briefing, members of the association headed to Shahbagh Police Station to file a case.

The incident reportedly stemmed from tensions between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-affiliated student wing and other groups over a social media post, leading to clashes at the police station area. At least 10 members of the journalists’ association were allegedly assaulted during the confrontation.

President Monjur Hossain Mahi alleged that journalists were obstructed while filming and that several members were physically assaulted. He further claimed that a large group of around 200 activists later joined the scene, escalating the situation.

He named several individuals allegedly involved in the attack, including leaders and activists from various residential halls of Dhaka University.

Association General Secretary Liton Islam also alleged physical assault and intimidation, stating that slogans were raised against journalism during the incident.

He added that multiple journalists had faced harassment in earlier incidents as well, and the association plans to meet the university vice-chancellor to raise their concerns.
