Shahedul Islam takes charge as BGMEA Secretary General

Md Shahedul Islam has taken charge as the new Secretary General of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The association confirmed the appointment in a press release on Saturday.

According to the release, Major General Dr Md Shahedul Islam (Retd.) brings over 35 years of experience in military leadership, international diplomacy and academia. BGMEA expressed hope that his leadership, international experience and policy-making skills would contribute to the sustained growth of the country's readymade garment sector.

Shahedul Islam served as Defence Attaché at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, DC, where he was awarded the prestigious US Legion of Merit Medal .

He holds a PhD from the University of Dhaka focusing on workers' skills assessment and development, alongside an MPhil and an MBA. He also earned a Master's degree in Management Studies from Osmania University in India .

In his career, he has served as Dean at the Bangladesh University of Professionals and as Treasurer and Professor at the Central University of Science and Technology. He also participated in several United Nations peacekeeping missions .

Upon assuming the role, Shahedul Islam expressed his delight at joining BGMEA, which represents the readymade garment sector—the main driver of the country's economy.

He said he is committed to working in coordination with the BGMEA Board and entrepreneurs to tackle challenges posed by the global economic situation, diversify products and markets, enhance skills and further strengthen Bangladesh's position in the international market.
