Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, a pivotal day in the fight to restore democracy in the country, is being observed today (November 10) with due respect and solemnity.

On this day in 1987, Noor Hossain, a resident of Old Dhaka, was shot and martyred while participating in a procession in the capital's streets as part of a democratic movement against the then autocratic regime.

On this occasion, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and various other political and social organizations have organized a range of activities.

On November 10, 1987, Noor Hossain, with the slogans "Free Democracy" and "Down with Autocracy" boldly written on his bare chest and back, embraced martyrdom in police gunfire during an anti-autocracy protest at Zero Point in the city, now commemorated as Shaheed Noor Hossain Square.

Noor Hossain's supreme sacrifice occupies a pivotal and inspiring place in the history of Bangladesh's democratic movement. His blood, spilled on the streets, became a catalyst that invigorated the struggle. His martyrdom gave new strength to the fight against autocracy.

In the following years, the relentless struggle culminated in the fall of the then-autocratic regime on December 6, 1990.

On the occasion of the day, BNP's Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, has paid heartfelt tribute to the memory of Shaheed Noor Hossain and the courageous fight against autocracy.
