Shahjalal shrine gets new cover on PM's behalf ahead of 707th annual Urs
The 707th annual Urs of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet will begin on Thursday, May 7. The formal proceedings of the Urs will commence with the laying of a new cover (gilaf) on the shrine in the morning and will conclude with the final prayers (Akheri Munajat) at dawn the following day.
On behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the gilaf was laid on Wednesday afternoon. Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kayum Chowdhury, as the prime minister's representative, placed the new cover on the shrine.
A special prayer was held after the ceremony. Prayers were offered for the well-being of the nation, the salvation of the souls of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and the late Arafat Rahman Koko, and for the health and long life of the prime minister.
The shrine management committee and the administration have taken comprehensive measures, including security, for the occasion. Devotees from across the country have already begun arriving in Sylhet.
A trustee of the Sylhet Environment and Heritage Preservation Trust noted that following tradition, the Urs proceedings will officially start with the laying of the gilaf on Thursday morning and conclude after the Fajr prayers the next day.
