Shama Obaed to lead Bangladesh delegation at ECOSOC humanitarian segment

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam is travelling to New York, USA, to attend the Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). She is scheduled to depart Dhaka for New York on Tuesday, June 16.

According to officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment will be held in New York from June 17 to 19. Bangladesh will participate in the segment, with the state minister leading the country's delegation.

The state minister will leave Dhaka for New York on Tuesday to attend the segment and is scheduled to return to the country on June 20 after its conclusion.

The Vice-President of the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment and Permanent Representative of Spain to the UN, Ambassador Hector Gomez, will serve as the chair of this year's segment.

The ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment is a major platform for addressing global humanitarian crises, disaster management, and coordination of relief assistance. Each year, it brings together member states, UN agencies, and donor countries to adopt a consensus humanitarian resolution.

The segment discusses and decides on issues such as strengthening collective global response to growing and complex humanitarian emergencies, enhancing humanitarian assistance, applying international humanitarian law, and the humanitarian impact of the climate crisis.

Participants include UN member states, humanitarian aid organisations, non-governmental organisations, academics, and representatives of crisis-affected communities.
