Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned the carrying of all types of sharp weapons and the use of fireworks and firecrackers in Tajia processions in the capital on the occasion of the holy Ashura.

The ban has been imposed to ensure public safety and maintain the solemnity of the religious event, DMP said in a public notification.

The notification stated that Tajia processions will be taken out from various parts of Dhaka metropolis on Friday. The carrying of sharp weapons such as ram daos, knives, scissors, spears, lances, swords and sticks, which pose a risk to public safety, has been completely prohibited.

DMP said the carrying of such sharp weapons or sticks often leads to untoward situations, creating fear and panic among residents and posing a direct threat to public safety. The use of fireworks and firecrackers has also been banned as it contradicts the religious and spiritual sanctity of this holy day.
