Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman said that the sentence handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal in the crimes against humanity case will be effective from the day the accused are arrested.

He said this at a press briefing after the verdict was delivered in the tribunal on Monday (November 17).

Stating that Sheikh Hasina has been given death penalty on three out of the five charges, he said: "The International Crimes Tribunal has made a groundbreaking verdict in Sheikh Hasina's case, which will bring peace and will be a milestone for justice and the rule of law in Bangladesh."

However, he did not give any specifics about the implementation of the death sentence.

Earlier, in an interview with Views Bangladesh, he said: "After the tribunal's verdict, filing an appeal in the Appellate Division within the stipulated time, bringing the appeal to the cause list and hearing it, final verdict, review application, hearing and announcement of the verdict - all in all, Sheikh Hasina's case will have to go through a long process like other cases in the tribunal in the past. That is, it is not possible to say how long it will take from the tribunal's verdict to the final verdict review in the Appellate Division. According to references in other cases, it could be one and a half to two years or more or less."
