Bangabandhu’s sculpture demolished in Jhenaidah
Leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have demolished a symbolic sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s raised finger at Swadhinata Chattar in Jhenaidah town.
The incident took place at around 10 am on Thursday November 13.
Witnesses said members of the movement brought out a protest procession in the town against the Awami League’s lockdown programme. They then moved towards the sculpture near the Shaheed Minar and used a bulldozer to demolish it.
Saidur Rahman, member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Jhenaidah, said, “The Awami League is again walking the path of repression. We have demolished Sheikh Mujib’s sculpture as a symbol of that misrule.”
Locals said the sculpture had been vandalised earlier on August 5 during the July Movement, but some parts had remained intact. On Thursday morning, the remaining portion was completely demolished using a bulldozer.
Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun of Jhenaidah Sadar police station said, “We visited the spot after receiving information. The situation is now under control.”
