The 64th death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq, a towering statesman of the subcontinent, a key proponent of Bengali nationalism, and one of the most influential political leaders in history, is being observed across the country in a befitting manner on Monday (April 27).

Various social, political and cultural organisations observing the day through commemorative programmes.

President Mohammad Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages paying tribute to this historical figure's legacy.

In his message, the prime minister described Fazlul Huq as a champion of the underprivileged farmers community, noting that he was among the first to recognise the deep link between Bengal’s agrarian economy and its political structure.

He highlighted Huq’s role in advancing pro-farmer and pro-labour policies after assuming office as Prime Minister of undivided Bengal in 1937.

The premier also underscored Huq’s contributions to expanding access to education and integrating marginalised communities into the mainstream of development.

Born on October 26, 1873, in present-day Jhalokathi, Fazlul Huq, full name Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, held several key positions during his political career, including Prime Minister of undivided Bengal, Home Minister of Pakistan, Governor of East Pakistan, and Chief Minister under the United Front government. He also served as the first Muslim Mayor of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation.

A prominent figure in anti-colonial politics, he is widely remembered for presenting the historic Lahore Resolution in 1940.

Fazlul Huq passed away in Dhaka on April 27, 1962, leaving behind a legacy as a visionary (leader), educationist and a symbol of communal harmony.
