Sherpur authorities have fined a local businessman Tk 10,000 for illegally storing a massive quantity of diesel in a residential building.

The action was taken during a surprise raid around 12:30am in the Gopalbari area of the town Thursday night (March 26).

The fined businessman, Tapas Nandi, owner of M/s Shimla Traders, was ordered to remove the diesel and the 25,000-liter tank from the residential premises by Friday to ensure public safety.

According to the district administration, the tank had been installed in the basement of a multi-storey building without any environmental clearance. Tapas Nandi and his associate Shafiqul Islam had been storing large quantities of diesel there for an extended period. The mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Mahmudul Hasan, acted on a tip-off and imposed the fine on the spot after confirming the illegal storage of flammable material in a densely populated area.

Executive Magistrate Mahmudul Hasan warned that unauthorised storage and sale of flammable substances pose a serious public safety risk. "Authorities will maintain strict oversight to ensure the tank and fuel are removed promptly and will conduct a thorough review of all licenses held by the establishment," he said.
