Shipyard worker dies after week on life support

Md Alauddin, 52, a worker who was critically injured in an accident at a shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram, has died after nearly a week on life support at a private hospital in Chattogram city.


He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital in the city's Prabartak Mor area around 8:30am on Sunday (August 23).


Alauddin was the son of Md Nurul Islam of Magpukur area in Kumira union. He met with the accident while working at Baraka Green Shipbreaking Yard in Sonaichhari union's Shitalpur Chowdhury Ghat area of Sitakunda upazila around 8am on August 16.


Kamal Uddin, the deceased's brother, said Alauddin fell while cutting a ship, sustaining serious injuries to his chest, neck and other parts of his body. His co-workers rescued him and took him to a hospital in Chattogram city, where he died after remaining on life support for a week while undergoing treatment.


Kamal Uddin said Alauddin has two sons — Rakibul Islam, who is in seventh grade, and Adilul Islam Rayyan, who is in fourth grade.


Mahinul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station, said Alauddin was injured while working on an old ship and later died while undergoing hospital treatment.


Police have sent the body to the morgue for post-mortem examination. After the post-mortem, the body will be handed over to the family, following which he will be buried at his own home after the funeral prayers.
