Shot Reshmi succumbs after seven-day battle for life

Reshmi Akter, 20, the young woman caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between two groups in Bayezid, Chattogram, has died. After fighting for her life for seven days, she succumbed to her injuries at Chattogram Medical College Hospital around 9:45 am on Thursday, May 14 .

Brigadier General Md Taslim Uddin, director of CMCH, confirmed the matter. Reshmi had been on life support in the hospital's ICU for nearly a week.

On the night of the incident, Reshmi had stepped out of her home in the Shaheed Minar Lane area of Raufabad Colony under Bayezid Bostami police station to fetch water for her mother. At that time, a fierce gunfight was ongoing between two rival groups over dominance in the area. A stray bullet struck Reshmi's eye, and she collapsed on the spot.

After the gunfire ceased, locals took her to a private hospital. When her condition worsened, she was transferred to CMCH ICU on Friday evening. Doctors reported that the bullet had caused severe damage inside her skull, leading to significant blood loss. A week later, she died.

Family members said indiscriminate shooting lasted for four to five minutes. A young man named Raju was also killed on the spot during the gunfight.
