A shrimp seller was fined Tk3,000 in Puthia of Rajshahi, for allegedly mixing jelly into shrimp to increase their weight and selling them, while 8kg of adulterated shrimp was seized and destroyed.

A mobile court conducted the raid at Jhalmalia Hat in Puthia between 7am and 8:40am on Thursday (August 20).

The operation was led by Shibu Das, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate of Puthia.

During the drive, the court found evidence that trader Md Ariful Islam was selling shrimp mixed with jelly. He was subsequently fined Tk 3,000.

The authorities seized 8kg of the adulterated shrimp and destroyed them at the spot.

The mobile court warned that food adulteration and the use of unsafe substances can pose serious health risks. The administration said such drives would continue to ensure food safety and urged traders to refrain from adulteration and consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing food.
