SI beaten to death in Savar after argument with auto-rickshaw driver

A minor altercation with an auto-rickshaw driver over parking escalated into a brutal murder, claiming the life of a Special Branch Sub-Inspector (SI) and leaving his son critically injured.

The incident occurred around 11pm on Saturday, September 5, in the Bordeshi area of Savar's Amin Bazar. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing.

Police said SI Md Altaf Hossain, who was serving in the Special Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, was beaten to death following an altercation over a trivial matter. He was a resident of Sirajganj's Enayetpur and lived with his family in a rented house in Savar's Madina City area, owning a small garment factory next to his residence.

According to police, the argument began after 10pm on Saturday over parking. The dispute escalated when an auto-rickshaw driver returned with 15 to 20 accomplices, vandalised and looted the factory. When Altaf and his son tried to intervene, they were beaten with sticks. Both were critically injured and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where Altaf was pronounced dead. His son, Arif, remains hospitalised.

Family members alleged that an attacker named Alauddin first threw Arif to the ground and kicked him in the chest, before another struck him on the head with a heavy object. Altaf was simultaneously attacked with local weapons.

Altaf's elder son, Shariful Islam, claimed a white private car frequented the area and its occupants consumed drugs near the factory. He demanded exemplary punishment for those involved.

Local resident Abul Kalam Azad said the incident occurred over parking in front of the factory. Despite adequate space for vehicles, the argument led to tragic consequences.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Savar Model Police Station Jahangir Alam said one suspect, named Jahurul Islam, 30, has been arrested in connection with the killing. No case has been filed yet.
