Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed in Sudan to be repatriated today
The bodies of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers, killed in a terrorist drone attack while serving in the United Nation (UN) mission in Sudan, are being flown back to Bangladesh today, Saturday.
Their funeral and burial will be conducted with full state honours.
According to officials, the aircraft carrying the bodies departed from Entebbe International Airport in Uganda on Friday at 7:00pm (Bangladesh time) and is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:15am today.
the fallen peacekeepers are Corporal Md Masud Rana, ASC (Natore) Sainik Md Mominul Islam, Bir (Kurigram) Sainik Shamim Reza, Bir (Rajbari) Sainik Shanta Mondal, Bir (Kurigram) Mess Waiter Mohammad Jahangir Alam (Kishoreganj) Laundry employee Md Sabuj Mia (Gaibandha).
Eight other Bangladeshi peacekeepers were injured in the attack, including Lieutenant Colonel Khondaker Khalekuzzaman, PSC, Ordnance (Kushtia); Sergeant MdMostakim Hossain; Bir (Dinajpur) Corporal Afroza Parvin Eti; Signals (Dhaka) Lance Corporal Mohibul Islam; EME (Barguna) Sainik MdMezbaul Kabir; Bir (Kurigram) Sainik Umme Hani Akter; Engineers (Rangpur) Sainik Chumki Akter, Ordnance (Manikganj); and Sainik Md Manazir Ahsan, Bir (Noakhali).
Among them, Private Md. Mejbaul Kabir underwent surgery due to serious injuries and is now under intensive observation, while the others are reported to be stable, with one already discharged.
The peacekeepers were carrying out their duties in the Abyei region of Sudan to maintain peace and stability under the UN flag when they were martyred. Their sacrifice stands as a proud testament to Bangladesh’s commitment to global peace.
