Six state-owned banks have Tk 1.48 lakh crore in default loans: Finance Minister
The total amount of defaulted loans held by six state-owned banks stood at Tk 1,47,776.36 crore as of June 30, with Janata Bank accounting for more than half of the amount, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told Parliament.
The minister disclosed the figure in response to a question from Bagerhat-4 lawmaker Md Abdul Alim during the third session of the National Parliament on Sunday (September 6).
Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal presided over the session.
Janata Bank had the highest volume of default loans at Tk 75,396.67 crore, according to the figures based on June 30, 2026 data.
Among the other five banks, Agrani Bank had Tk 29,029.67 crore in default loans, while Rupali Bank had Tk 19,281.74 crore and Sonali Bank Tk 15,048.39 crore.
Basic Bank’s default loans stood at Tk 8,131.09 crore, while Bangladesh Development Bank had the lowest amount among the six at Tk 888.79 crore.
The lawmaker had sought the latest overall and bank-wise figures for default loans held by state-owned banks. In reply, the finance minister presented the data as of June 30, 2026.
With more than Tk 75,000 crore in default loans, Janata Bank alone accounted for over half of the combined default loans of the six state-owned banks.
