The Election Commission (EC) has announced that the distribution of smart cawould be put on hold from November 1 until the 12th national parliamentary elections. The decision was taken in a recent meeting, reports media outlets. According to EC sources, EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam also directed the National Identity Card (NID) wing to implement the decision. As per the directive, smart card distribution programme will be suspended from November 1 onwards until the end of the National elections. The ongoing smart card distribution process at the field level must be completed by the end of October 30. The EC is set to issue a notification in this regard.

চলতি বছরের ১ নভেম্বর থেকে স্মার্টকার্ড বিতরণ বন্ধ রাখবে নির্বাচন কমিশন (ইসি)। দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন সামনেরেখে এই ‍সিদ্ধান্ত দিয়েছে ইসি। ভোট শেষে আবার তা চালু হবে। সম্প্রতি অনুষ্ঠিত এক বৈঠকে এমন সিদ্ধান্ত হয় বলে ইসি সূত্র জানিয়েছে। এরই মধ্যে নির্বাচন কমিশন সচিব মো. জাহাঙ্গীর আলম এনআইডি অনুবিভাগকে সিদ্ধান্তটি বাস্তবায়নের জন্য নির্দেশনা দিয়েছেন। নির্দেশনায় বলা হয়েছে, মাঠপর্যায়ে চলমান স্মার্ট কার্ড বিতরণ কার্যক্রম আগামী ৩০ অক্টোবরের মধ্যে শেষ করতে হবে। ১ নভেম্বর পরবর্তী সময় থেকে জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন শেষ হওয়া পর্যন্ত স্মার্ট কার্ড বিতরণ কার্যক্রম স্থগিত থাকবে। বিষয়টি মাঠ পর্যায়ে জানানোর জন্য নির্দেশনা দেওয়া হয়েছে। প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার (সিইসি) কাজী হাবিবুল আউয়াল এরই মধ্যে জানিয়েছেন, নভেম্বরে সংসদ নির্বাচনের তফসিল ঘোষণা করা হবে। ডিসেম্বরের শেষ সপ্তাহ থেকে জানুয়ারির প্রথম সপ্তাহের মধ্যে হবে ভোটগ্রহণ। এরপর ফের চালু হবে স্মার্টকার্ড বিতরণ।
