Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the literature, poetry and philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore can play a vital role in building humane and enlightened lives, stressing that a just and beautiful society can emerge through the practice of Tagore’s ideals.

He made the remarks on Friday morning (May 8) while addressing a discussion marking the 165th birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate at Patisar, one of Tagore’s historic estates in Bangladesh.

Describing Tagore as a “poet of universal humanity,” Mirza Fakhrul said the legendary writer’s influence extended across poetry, music, drama and philosophy, leaving an enduring impact on Bengali culture and global literature alike.

“People should shape their lives through the teachings and literature of Rabindranath Tagore,” he said, adding that Tagore’s acclaimed work Gitanjali had once captivated the world and elevated Bengali literature to international prominence.

Highlighting Tagore’s connection with rural Bengal, the BNP leader said the poet had worked to improve the lives of farmers during his stay in Patisar. He noted that Tagore took initiatives to modernise agriculture and introduced rural banking concepts after witnessing the hardships faced by peasants.

Referring to the country’s political situation, Mirza Fakhrul alleged that a “frustrated group” was trying to destabilise society. He said the people of Bangladesh had repeatedly fought for change and democratic rights through the 1971 Liberation War and subsequent democratic movements.

The event was chaired by Dr ANM Bazlur Rashid and attended by several political leaders, including Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayem and Mizanur Rahman Minu, alongside local administration officials and public representatives.

A cultural programme featuring recitations, music and dance performances by artists from Dhaka and local cultural groups was held following the discussion.
