A man has been arrested for allegedly beating his father to death and burying the body in a paddy field following a family dispute in Khurushkul, Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila.

The deceased, Mohammad Saiyad, 50, was reportedly killed early Monday morning after a heated argument at home. His son, Mohammad Rafique, was arrested Tuesday night after police recovered the body wrapped in a sack, buried near their residence.

Locals alerted authorities after noticing a foul odor and discovering a freshly buried shirt near the field. Acting on a 999 emergency call, police arrived at the scene and, with help from residents, unearthed the body around 9pm.

Rafique’s wife, Sharmin Akter, told investigators that Saiyad had returned from morning prayers and engaged in a quarrel with his wife. Rafique intervened and allegedly struck his father with a stick, causing his death. The body was kept in a sack inside the house before being buried later that night by Rafique, his brother Sahabuddin Zia, and their mother.

Sharmin also claimed her husband threatened her with similar consequences if she revealed the incident.

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Elias Khan confirmed the arrest and said further investigations are underway. “The murder appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute. We are working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved,” he said.

The body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case is being prepared for filing.
