Son attacks father with meat cleaver for refusing to buy new phone

Police have arrested a 20-year-old youth, Salman, for allegedly hacking his father with a meat cleaver after he refused to buy him a mobile phone in Fatullah, Narayanganj. The injured father, Kamal Mia, 45, is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital in the capital.

The incident took place around 12:30 am on Wednesday, June 3, in the Bhuiygaon bus stand area of Fatullah. Police arrested Salman on Wednesday afternoon.

According to local sources, Kamal Mia and his son sold vegetables at Bhuiygaon market. Salman had been demanding a mobile phone for several days, but his father could not afford to buy one due to financial constraints, leading to frequent arguments.

On Tuesday night, during an altercation, Salman allegedly attacked his father with a meat cleaver. Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing Kamal Mia's screams. He was first taken to Khanpur Hospital in Narayanganj and later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Police have recovered the weapon used in the attack.

Fatullah Model Police Station OC Mahabubur Alam said the accused is addicted to drugs. The attack stemmed from a dispute over buying a mobile phone. Legal action is underway.
