A 65-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death with an axe by his son-in-law in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur.

The victim, Majid Morol, a banana trader and son of late Altu Morol of Madhyapara in Jamalpur, was attacked at his shop in the Uttar Jamalpur area on Friday afternoon (August 28).

He was later declared dead around 6pm at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex.

Police said the accused, 35-year-old Mozammel Hossain, allegedly arrived at the shop carrying a trolley bag. According to the victim’s daughter, Shahanaz Begum, Mozammel took an axe from the bag and attacked her father before fleeing the scene, leaving the bag behind.

Local residents rescued Majid and took him to the health complex, where on-duty physician Dr Mohammad Ziaur Rahman declared him dead.

Family members said Mozammel had been involved in a long-standing dispute with his wife, Shahanaz, and allegedly used drugs and assaulted her. As a result, she had frequently left her husband’s home and stayed with her father.

Kaliganj Police Station OC Mohammad Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident, saying police had visited the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. The body was being sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Police said legal proceedings were underway and efforts were being made to bring the accused to justice.
