Son-in-law surrenders after allegedly killing father-in-law in Gazipur
A man accused of hacking his father-in-law to death in Gazipur’s Kaliganj surrendered at a police station, a day after the killing.
Mozammel Haque, 35, alias Muza Sarker, went to Kaliganj Police Station on this morning (August 29) and admitted responsibility for the killing of his father-in-law, Majid Morol, 70, a banana trader.
According to police, Majid was attacked with an axe from behind around 4:30pm on Friday while he was heading to Jamalpur Bazar with bananas. He was taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex after the attack but was declared dead by doctors.
The killing reportedly followed a long-running family dispute. Majid’s daughter Shahana had been living at her father’s home after allegedly being assaulted and forced out of her husband’s house around 15 days earlier.
The family also alleged that Mozammel was a drug addict and had frequently subjected Shahana to physical and mental abuse.
Majid’s son Liton Morol filed a murder case against Mozammel at Kaliganj Police Station on Friday night.
Police launched an overnight operation to arrest him. However, Mozammel surrendered at the station the following morning.
Md. Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, confirmed the surrender, saying the accused would be produced before a court after completion of the necessary legal procedures.
