The Government of South Korea has dispatched 20,000 metric tonnes of rice as humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees sheltering in Bangladesh.

According to the Embassy of Bangladesh in Seoul, the rice shipment will be distributed among refugees in Cox’s Bazar through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of South Korea organized a ceremony at Gunsan Port on October 1 to mark the departure of the vessel carrying the aid.

Bangladesh Embassy Counsellor Tarajul Islam attended the event along with the Director General of MAFRA’s International Cooperation Bureau, the Deputy Regional Director of the UN WFP, and senior officials from South Korea’s local government.

During the ceremony, Counsellor Islam thanked the South Korean government for its continued humanitarian support for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh—particularly at a time when global assistance for the displaced community is facing a severe shortfall.

He also urged the Republic of Korea to continue supporting efforts to ensure the safe and sustainable repatriation and rehabilitation of the Rohingyas to their ancestral homes in Myanmar.
