Sports Ministry forms five-member committee to probe cadet's death at BKSP

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has formed a five-member high-level inquiry committee to investigate the death of BKSP cadet Yasin Arafat Jim (Yasar Ahmed Jim), who was electrocuted inside the campus of the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP).

The committee has been tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the incident, identifying any responsible parties and recommending measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The panel will be led by Md. Mahfuzul Alam Khan, Additional Secretary (Sports-2) at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Its members include Colonel Md. Golam Mabud Hasan, Director (Training) of BKSP; A B M Ehsanul Mamun, Director (Planning and Development) at the National Sports Council; and Md. Mominul Hasan, Principal of the Government College of Physical Education.

Md. Mizanur Rahman, deputy secretary of the ministry's Sports-1 wing, will serve as member secretary.

According to BKSP's preliminary findings, the Class 10 karate cadet was electrocuted late on July 28 while attempting to climb over a wall inside the academy campus after finishing training.

His body was later taken to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The incident has raised questions over how a fatal electrical accident could occur within the premises of the country's premier government-run sports academy.

Jim was the son of Mokhtar Ahmed, headmaster of a government primary school in Kutubjom Union of Maheshkhali Upazila in Cox's Bazar. Regarded as a promising young karate athlete, his sudden death has prompted widespread grief among his family and Bangladesh's sporting community.

The ministry has directed the committee to submit its findings within seven working days. The panel has also been authorized to co-opt additional members if required to facilitate the investigation.
