Staff strike stalemates services at SBMC hospital
Medical services at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) Hospital in Barishal were severely disrupted on Thursday (August 14) after doctors, nurses, and officials launched an unannounced strike, alleging an attack by students amid ongoing protests for health sector reforms.
The strike halted key services, including surgeries, causing significant suffering for patients. Hospital employees have declared they will not resume duties until security is ensured.
Tensions escalated when hunger-striking students left the hospital premises. The protest movement remains divided—one faction announced a one-month suspension, while lead organizer Mohiuddin Rani vowed to continue.
Hospital Director Brigadier General Moshiul Munim acknowledged service disruptions but said doctors and nurses were still attending to patients where possible. Many patients voiced frustration over postponed treatments and surgeries.
