Starlink gets BTRC nod for 50,000 kits, already 594 connections active
Starlink, the satellite internet venture of Elon Musk's SpaceX, is set to officially launch its services in Bangladesh, marking a major step toward expanding high-speed internet access across the country.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has approved the import of 50,000 Starlink internet kits, significantly accelerating the company's rollout.
Currently, Starlink has 594 active internet connections in Bangladesh, enabled through pre-approved trial operations. With this latest clearance, the company plans to rapidly expand its footprint, particularly in underserved and remote regions.
A high-level Starlink delegation, led by Vice President of Business Operations Lauren Dreyer and Director of International Strategy and Government Relations Richard Griffiths, arrived in Dhaka on Friday. The team is scheduled to meet Chief Adviser in Bangladesh, Dr Muhammad Yunus, and formally announce the launch at a press conference at 5.00pm. The delegation will also attend the 'July Rejuvenation' event in Hatirjheel and depart on July 19.
Starlink has introduced three new tariff plans for Bangladeshi users: Roam, Local Priority, and Global Priority.
Under the Roam Plan, users will pay: Tk 6,000 for 50 GB; Tk 12,000 for unlimited data; Tk 56,000 for global roaming.
The Local Priority Plan offers: Tk 4,600 for 50 GB; Tk 11,800 for 500 GB; Additional data blocks at Tk 1,800 (50 GB) and Tk 9,000 (500 GB); Download speeds between 50–220 Mbps and upload speeds of 10–30 Mbps.
The Global Priority Plan, designed for global and maritime use, is priced at: Tk 32,000 for 50 GB; Tk 84,000 for 500 GB; Extra data blocks at Tk 13,000 (50 GB) and Tk 65,000 (500 GB)
Previously launched plans include Residence and Residence Lite, priced at Tk 6,000 and Tk 4,200 per month respectively, with a one-time equipment cost of Tk 47,000.
Starlink began accepting orders in Bangladesh on May 20. Following BTRC's recent approval for trial commercial service, the company has moved quickly to establish its presence.
The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology welcomed the development, stating that Starlink's entry will play a transformative role in improving internet access, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
